The Do’s and Don’ts of Approaching a Girl to Date

RELATIONSHIP CORNER

I’m not sure what is going on, but lately it seems like Facebook has become the new Match.com.  While it can be funny, and endearing it can also be ALL WRONG!  Last week, I received one email in particular that had me wondering what is wrong with the world of Facebook?  Seriously!!!  Specifically, this one guy claimed I was meant for him and he was meant for me.  There were no two better people that could set the world on fire.  He went on to say “Let’s make our 2 bloods 1 and you can be my Queen.  Marry me!”  Yes, I received a marriage proposal via a Facebook email, by someone I do not know and is not even a Facebook friend.   Attention, men this is NOT the way to woo a girl.
Contrary to popular beliefs women are very easy creatures.  We want someone who values us, makes us feel like we are special and cares about us.  Given the recent transactions on Facebook and discussions with my male friends, I thought I’d share some Do’s and Don’ts in asking a girl out.
DO introduce yourself.  Keep it simple and just be yourself!   Introducing yourself as “Hi, I’m Jon Doe.  What’s your name? And/or How are you?” it’s that easy.  You don’t have to promise the world without even knowing her name.  I have gone on dates with guys I might not have otherwise, simply because their approach was simple.
DON’T depend on social media, texting or emailing to interact with her.  These avenues for communications are very easy but, also weaken your assertiveness.  Be a man and pick up the phone and call her.  If you don’t have her number, ask her for it and follow up with a phone call.
DO be confident.  Remember your amazing qualities and reasons why any girl should be so fortunate to get to know you.  Confidence (not arrogance) may possibly be the hottest feature in a man. Even the most assertive woman wants a confident man that shows her she can lean on him.
DON’T act a certain way and present yourself in a light that is not true.   This can be transparent and certainly doesn’t last.  After all, with enough time your true identity will emerge.  You want her to like you for who you are, NOT what you think she wants.
DO ask her questions about herself.  This shows that you are interested in her, especially if you remember what she tells you and later on refer to it.  This shows that you were listening!  This is a real winner for points with women and separates you from the pack.
DON’T talk mainly about yourself.  Yes, people’s favourite topic is themselves, but sometimes talking exclusively about yourself gives the appearance that you are not interested in the other person.
DO let her know the attributes about her you enjoy.  However, a word of caution here - in the beginning, you don’t have to overdo it with the compliments, because this could make you appear like you have the scent of desperation.  Definitely as you get to know her better you should kick up the compliments.  But, in the beginning it’s a good idea to let her know the simple things about her you appreciate.
DON’T talk about how beautiful another girl is with the girl you are interested in.  This is a BAD move!  It makes you appear like you do not value her, and you’re not interested in her as well as that she is not in the realm of beauty as the other girl you are talking about.
DO ask her out.  If you genuinely like her and want to get to know her better, go ahead and ask her out!

San Francisco Decorator Showcase 2011, the Dining Room

Grant Gibson, the dapper designer and design blogger is everywhere these days. Whether it is a trip to Columbia shared on his blog and High Gloss online magazine, or his latest adventure with the Elle Decor Modern Life Concept House opening May 17th in NYC, Grant gets around!

Most recently, Grant participated in this year's San Francisco Decorator Showcase where he designed the Dining Room. I like to call the design "the Bold and the Beautiful". With his dramatic use of graphic patterns and saturated color, Grant brings punch and fun to a very stately space.

The first thing to catch my eye when I walked into the room was the bold painted floor. The high contrast and the over scaled octagonal pattern makes one smile at the get go. It is beautifully balanced with a more subdued silvery grass cloth wall covering by Phillip Jeffries.

The modern light fixture was a custom made hand blown glass piece made especially for Grant's Dining Room by the Lindsey Adelman Studio. (Be sure to check out their website....amazing stuff!). It is more than just a light source. It is a brilliant way to prominently add art to a space. I am grateful to Grant for the introduction to Lindsey Adelman Studio!

I think Kelly Green is making a come back with a vengeance. The Dining Room chairs look fabulous decked out in green, and with the addition of the yellow bowls, blue and white urns and pink peonies, there was a fresh exuberance to the space.

Grant always has a little surprise up his sleeve when he designs. He imagined this room to be a space for everyone, including the youngest members of the family. It is so fun to see a stylish booster chair included at the "grownup's" table. What better way for a youngster to develop an appreciation for beautiful art and design?

Grant Gibson has a way of making everyone feel welcome and cared for. You know it as soon as you meet him, and you can see it in his design work. The Dining Room is the perfect room for him to have designed. It is a place where people gather together, share a meal and good conversation. It is a place that is welcoming and fun, just like Grant!

Mr. Grant Gibson!

GET BUSY LIVING OR GET BUSY DYING (Achtung Series)

People will spend most of their waking hours working and yet, there are a lot of people unhappy with their job.  Why is that?  Last week I posed this very question to my Facebook friends.
It’s a perplexing one.  As children we are told that life is what we make it.  When we are asked what we want to be when we grow up, the sky is the limit.  Yet, somewhere between being a child and becoming an adult, dreams dissipate.  We see all the reasons why not, instead of the one reason why.  The Why Not’s become mountains so huge to overcome that compromising and finding a smaller mountain to climb becomes the accepted norm.  HOW IS THAT LIVING???
People go to school to advance themselves in life and come out with student debt.  They graduate get a car and a home and a job to pay the bills and increasing debt.  People fall in love get married and have kids, incurring more debt, so they work more.  And all of a sudden life becomes a rat race, working for the weekends.  But, remember even if you win the race you’re still just a rat.
This has become life.  Anything outside of that is the exception.
But, I dare to you BE the exception.  Life is meant to be abundant.  And it is never is too late to become what it is you wanted to be when you grow up.  I’m still a kid, and if I’m successful at it, plan to be a kid until the day I die.
The beauty of the high jump is it is a metaphor to life.  The bar is a barrier I must clear. If I am successful the bar is raised to a new height to be challenged.  Sure, I may fail from time to time, but the important thing is that I rise to the challenge every time, never doubting, applying all my efforts and believing in my ability.  For at the end of the day, I’m on a quest to see just how high I can jump.  And in life I am trying to explore my maximal potential… how high I can go in life.  I measure my success not by others, but by how close I approach my potential.
Sure, there have been times I’ve been tempted to join the rat race… But, in the end I’ve realized that’s a race I don’t want to win.  As I expel my last breath of air in life, I want to know I left no stone unturned and truly lived life to its fullest.  We’ve only got this one life here on earth, better make it count!
Get busy living or get busy dying,
Nicole

Sunday's Lyrics - Man I Used To Be by K-OS

Every now and then I like to stop and ask myself, where am I, where am I going and where was I?  I often feel like I’m in a race against the clock, trying to make the most out of what life has to offer.  There is no telling when our final hours may be.  My greatest fear is reaching the pearly gates and having God say “Nicole, you lived a good life… But, you know you could have lived a GREAT life.”
So, while I might stumble along the way and even backslide, as long as I can take notice, make necessary corrections and move in the direction I desire, I know the greatness that life has to offer will be fully experienced.
I believe it is easy for us to lose sight of life.  Just because you are alive doesn’t mean you are living.  Conformity and the rat race beckons daily.  When we are kids we paint a picture beyond our adult imagination and somewhere we lose sight of it.
I like this song because it paints a picture of a man trying to find the person he used to be.  Somewhere along the way he lost sight of himself, values and principles.  And in so doing, he finds himself doing things he never thought he would do.  He’s searching… searching… searching desperately.  But at least he has realized he isn’t on the path he desires to be and is trying to make that change.
And for this he should be praised… It’s never too late to be the type of person you desired to be… It’s okay if you’ve taken some backward steps if you are willing to start moving forward…The real tragedy is when we settle…
Sunday's Lyrics - Man I Used To Be by K-OS

I tried it, I couldn't find it
Now I just wanna get back to me
ohh baby, hoo hoo
Back into the man I used to be

I tried it, I couldn't find it
Now I just wanna get back to me
ohh baby, hoo hoo
Back into the man I used to be

Things that I said I wouldn't do, I did 'em
Secrets below the surface of truth I hid 'em
This man kind is past, but can he erase
The tears of a million years is human race
Of animals, that talk and walk upright
Then slave all day and fall in a trance at night
Flowing the planet, trying to find missing links
Like the men we used to be and always suppose to think
Mysteries, maybe not
It's getting hot, we better configure the plot, but
I hold a pen with the grip so tight
That'a squeeze the ink out'ta the page, and write a song for the people
Came up from the underground, now I write above on a hovercraft sound
This microphone, like an an amphetamine
Keeping me clean, speaking in dreams
So nature can intervene, just for a scene

I tried it, I couldn't find it
Now I just wanna get back to me
ohh baby, hoo hoo
Back into the man I used to be

I walk along this path alone, my feet hurt
Lost some friends along the way, I did dirt
I went to church, I tried everything
From leaving my body, to watching the birds sing
For hours, so I could feel heavenly powers
Had been across the universe and inside of flowers
But what is it worth, i'm still just a man on the earth
Rappers are acting like man tan
Can I be candid, I can't stand it
Rap bandit, got heaven acting frantic
I wanna swing my sword decapitate

I tried it, I couldn't find it
Now I just wanna get back to me
ohh baby, hoo hoo
Back into the man I used to be

But what is a man if he acts like an ape
So I sit back, planning my great escape
Load up my EPS and peruse my record crate
The man I used to be, I can only see by looking beyond me
So what is reality, I don't know

I tried it, I couldn't find it
Now I just wanna get back to me
ohh baby, hoo hoo
Back into the man I used to be

[Outro]
wrong song
You know what
I woke up in the morning
I took a trip to the corner store
That's when I heard my calling
But i'd never heard the voice of truth before
So I kept on walking
Pretended I didn't see
Walked by a window and my reflection said to me
You could try all the same
But you'll never know this mystery
There's no pilot on your plane
So you're not the man you used to be
Try all the game, but you'll never know this mystery
When your pilot has no plane
Said you're the man you used to be seen
Holla and ya holla, you folla you fall
Ya holler and ya holla, you folla you fall
Ya holler and ya holla, you folla you fall
Ya holler and ya holla, you folla you fall
Ya holler and ya holla, you folla you fall
Ya holler and ya holla, you folla you fall
Yo, microphones get ripped holding us back
K dash rocking it out, rocking the cold style
Making it up, go along singing my song
Woke up, in the early morn didn't know what was going on
Whatever, I don't really know
Flows like an immaculate goat what up, whatever
